The central state provides for compulsory tests for students

“This is a huge volume of testing all at once,” said Mathews. “Some universities did tests over a series of days – maybe 200 or 300 a day, that sort of thing.”

National Guard personnel will help with this logistics, she said.

Some students who arrived early have already been tested.

To allow time for test results to arrive, the first week of teaching at Central State will be moved away, Mathews said.

There is no “perfect solution” to the lingering problem of the pandemic, she said. A single test is only a snapshot in time, and recurring testing will be required at some point, she said. Asymptomatic students can infect others without knowing it, so social distancing, frequent hand washing and masks will be crucial, she added.

Students found positive for COVID-19 will be isolated on campus, with buildings designated for short-term isolation. In some cases, the entire duration of the isolation may need to be on campus, in situations where the student is international or cannot be picked up by their family.

Students will also be required to sign a “campus agreement or pledge” stressing the importance of public health recommendations.

“The testing is part of our plan to prevent the spread,” said Mathews. “We don’t want people to start feeling comfortable or complacent about having been tested at some point and the test was negative.”

In the 2018-19 academic year, Central State had approximately 2,000 students, according to US News and World Report.
