SCHELLSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) – Firefighters from across Pennsylvania will be in Schellsburg all weekend for the 129th Central District Volunteer Firefighters Association Convention at 1458 Market Street, Schellsburg, PA, hosted by the Shawnee Valley Volunteer Fire Company.
Central District Volunteer Firefighters Association President Eldon Mickel said it was a big deal for the small town to hold the convention, with 700 registered firefighters.
They encourage members of the community to come and join in the fun. The weekend will be filled with ceremonies, street fair food, games and more!
This convention means a lot to firefighters as they all come together to camp and make lifelong friendships.
“Once you come to one convention, you’re probably going to go to another and it helps central districts, it helps firefighter associations, and it helps businesses because they can go and interact with other firefighters,” said Michael. .
“Our group consists of 5 or 6 different counties we all get together every year it’s our big reunion party and we support each other throughout the year on all of our functions we travel and go to their fundraisers of funds, they come to ours, we have just established a long and good friendship,” said former Kane Fire Company Chief Thomas Brinkley and Irvona Fire Company Chief Dudley Spencer.
Friday, August 27 will begin with a memorial to Flight-93 at 9:30 a.m. and will have meetings, banquets and games all day and at 7:30 p.m. a classic rock band will perform.
Saturday, August 28 will include equipment judging from 1-4 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge High School, grand parade at 5 p.m., trophy presentation on stage and raffle winners posted at 8 p.m. 30, and fireworks at 9 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
