Deputy Minister of Lands inaugurates Amenfi Central District Mining Committee

The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, on Friday, March 18, 2022, inaugurated the mining committee of the central district of Amenfi in the Western region.
Delivering the keynote speech, Mr. George Mireku Duker stressed that it is important for the mining sector to have a well-regulated and accountable mining program in each district.
He said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has repeatedly said that his government is not against mining but rather for responsible mining.
“We believe that by inaugurating you in such a task, you will work diligently for the improvement of small-scale mining in this district.
The deputy minister has tasked the district mining committee with sensitizing the communities that make up the district on the need to comply with mining standards.
“We said we wanted to preserve and reserve the small-scale mining sector for Ghanaians. We do not want foreign nationals to participate in the small scale mining sector as stipulated by the law governing mining in Ghana.
He reiterated the need to use the proceeds of our gold to develop the nation by creating local champions within the industry.
“As a ministry, we are playing our part in ensuring that Ghanaians have facilities with banks to enable operators to purchase their own mining machinery and not be dependent on foreign nationals for capital injunctions in the industry. “, did he declare.
“As I speak to you, we have been able to negotiate with a bank that is willing to help Small Scale Mining with $25 million to have their own capital to start their businesses”
The deputy minister further discouraged the use of mercury in the system and added that the ministry, following a directive from the president, has purchased 100 mercury-free machines which will be used in gold processing. This will soon be commissioned by HE the President.
Hon. Mireku Duker indicated that the Committee members will be invited for capacity building training to enable them to work hard for the people of the district and the nation as a whole.
Amenfi Central District General Manager, Hon. Patrick Huckson Amponteng expressed his gratitude to the Deputy Minister and assured him that they will do their best to deliver and will also work closely with the Minerals Commission to achieve the set targets.
