Central government and state governments plunder people: MLA
Sunny Joseph, MPP, said on Monday that central and state governments were competing to extract money from people by raising taxes. He was inaugurating a march and dharna in front of the main post office led by the District Congress Committee (DCC) as part of the national agitation led by the Congress against the policy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the Center and the LDF government in the state, accused of making people’s lives miserable by raising the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas. Mr Joseph said BJP leaders were the ones who staged bullock cart protests during Congress rule when there was a slight increase in fuel prices. With the BJP coming to power, fuel prices have skyrocketed. The price was increasing day by day. “When crude oil prices fell internationally, fuel prices here rose steadily. What kind of economy is it? he wondered. After elections in five states, oil prices have been increased 10 times in the past 11 days, Joseph said. Rising fuel prices had led to a sharp rise in the prices of basic necessities as well as the cost of building materials. The state LDF government adopted the same policy as the central government. “When the central government raised prices under the Oommen Chandy government, the people of the state were relieved by the reduction in taxes here. But the Pinarayi Vijayan government shows no leniency in this regard and urges the people,” he said. It was proof of how an elected government can be anti-people in the center and in the state, he said. CDC President Martin George chaired the event. Mayor TO Mohanan and others spoke.
