Central District offering COVID booster shots

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – Based on recent recommendations from the Center for Disease Control, the Central District Health Department will immediately begin offering third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to people with compromised immune systems.

The health department will also offer third doses to those who are not immunocompromised starting the third week of September.

For those who wish to receive their third dose now, they must meet the following conditions, according to CDC guidelines:

  • Those undergoing active cancer treatment
  • Those who have received an organ transplant or are taking suppressive medications
  • Stem cell transplant recipients in the past two years
  • Those with severe primary immunodeficiency
  • People with advanced or untreated HIV
  • Those on active treatment including high-dose corticosteroids

Anyone with these conditions or who thinks they need a third dose should consult their GP before going to the health service.

The CDC states that people with weakened immune systems do not always develop the same level of immunity after vaccination.

In addition, studies are beginning to show the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine drops after 8 months, in particular against the Delta variant.

Based on this recommendation, the health department will offer third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to the general public beginning the week of September 20.

The health department said vaccines are extremely important as they are the best line of defense against COVID-19, which continues to grow in their district.

The district has confirmed over 100 cases of the virus in the past 7 days. Currently, less than 4 out of 10 inhabitants of the district are vaccinated.

The Health Department offers immunization clinics, including boosters, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. Vaccinations are offered to you free of charge.
