BJP deploys central ministers to Telangana to explain PM’s contribution to state

Delighted with the success of its National Executive Committee meeting and a mega public rally here, the BJP is accelerating its preparations for the Telangana elections.

The central leadership has now appointed union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Purushottam Rupala, Pralhad Joshi, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Mahendra Nath Pandey and a few others as “Pravas ministers” for all 14 of the 17 Lok Sabha constituencies in Telangana.

As part of the Lok Sabha Pravas Yojana, the BJP’s public outreach program in constituencies where it suffered defeat in the 2019 elections, ministers’ visits aim to explain to voters the central government grants and programs that directly or indirectly benefit them.

“The TRS government claims each program as its own while it is the Center that funds several welfare initiatives like food grains under the Garib Kalyan Yojana, gas connections under Ujjwala. The interactions of the union ministers would help the Telangana public know what the Modi government is doing for them,” said Premender Reddy, General Secretary of Telangana BJP. DH.

The BJP had won four Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 elections – Secunderabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Adilabad. The Pravas list however includes Adilabad (ST reserved). “It is because the constituency dominated by the tribes is very large and we still need to strengthen the party there. In any case, we plan to cover the other three LS constituencies as well in later phases,” said Reddy, who is the Pravas Yojana program organizer here.

The constituencies of Secunderabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad Lok Sabha are represented respectively by Union Tourism Minister Kishan Reddy, BJP Head of State Bandi Sanjay and Dharmapuri Aravind, an outspoken leader who had defeated the minister’s daughter in chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, K Kavitha.

According to party leaders, ministers are expected to tour their respective constituencies twice a month until the 2024 elections, staying for two nights each time. Pravas tours are expected to begin later this week. The 14 segments of Parliament are divided into four groups, with four central ministers in charge of their responsibility.

The strategy is to cover all assembly segments falling under these Lok Sabha seats, in time for the 2023 assembly elections which lie in between. The BJP operates in Telangana with the aim of toppling Rao’s TRS from power.

The BJP has in fact started connecting its national leaders with the public in Telangana using its NEC meeting in Hyderabad. Leaders from other states, including central ministers, former CMs, were sent to the 119 Telangana assembly constituencies to interact with residents. For example, former CM Biplab Deb from Tripura traveled to Adilabad in the northernmost part of Telangana while former CM Vijay Rupani from Gujarat was in Jadcherla, a southern constituency of Telangana. Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai was in Nizamabad.
