3A/4A West-Central District Championship Track: Curtis, Yelm boys, Capital, Tahoma girls win tag team titles

KENT, Wash. “One is made up of sisters, the other good friends who argue and compete for the same team. But both duos met with success this week at the 3A/4A Bi-District athletics meet held at French Field in Kent.

The Molls, Hana and Amanda, personally collected a third of the Capital girls’ 76 points on Friday as the Cougars beat second-placed Central Kitsap, 76-66, to claim the 3A girls’ tag team title.

The sister act did most of this work in her specialty – pole vaulting.

Each Moll cleared 14 feet in the event to grab the top two spots in the bi-district meet at the state meet that begins next Thursday and runs through Saturday at Mount Tahoma High. Being the first two in the event was good for 18 team points.

Amanda Moll added eight more points finishing second in the long jump, an event she completed in the same session as the pole vault. Moll jumped long 17 feet, seven inches to win 17-11.75 from Kara Mattison of Prairie.

“I was definitely a little more tired than usual,” Amanda Moll said. “Certainly my legs hurt.”

While Amanda Moll will compete in both events at State, she won’t have to worry about the tight deadline in Tacoma next weekend. The 3A pole vault is scheduled for Friday morning while the long jump will not take place until Saturday.

This could bode well for the state pole vault leader (14-9.25) and her sister as they attack the state meet record of 14-0 set last time out. the state meet was held, in 2019, by Chloe Cunliffe of West Seattle.

While the Moll sisters’ efforts resulted in a district tag team title, the Federal Way pair of Cassandra Atkins and Esther Akinlosotu did not push the Eagles to a tag team title. It went to Tahoma, 103-93, over runner-up Curtis.

Akinlosotu and Atkins, however, finished first and second twice this week for Federal Way. On Friday, the winner’s circle belonged to Akinlosotu, whose 38-8.75 triple jump beat her teammate’s 37-10.75.

The result overturned what the pair of Eagles accomplished on the first day of bi-district, when Atkins won the long jump followed by Akinlosotu.

“We club together,” Atkins said. “So she’s always a good competition to have here. Someone to push me. She got injured, so she’s not been jumping as well lately. But she still beat me today.

The performances of the Capital sisters and the pair of Eagles were just a few of the many strong times and marks that dotted the Day 2 competition in the bi-district. Included was a new state best performance this spring in women’s javelin.

Kentridge’s Saydi Orange has already led the state in the event, having tossed a 154-9 in a tri-meet at French Field on April 28. On Friday, she made it 157-0.

In the men’s long jump, Evergreen’s Jonathan Landry broke a personal best of 23-0 1/2 (unofficial), tying the state-leading mark set May 14 by Walla Walla senior Dash Sirmon at the MCC Championships.

In doing so, Landry beat bi-district event favorite Kyler Ronquillo of Yelm and set an Evergreen school record, according to athletic director Christian Swain.

The Tornados junior also qualified with his second-place jump of 22-6, which also tied his best so far this spring.

“It peaked at the right time,” Ronquillo said. “My last jump, I felt good. Aligned. I have to control what I can control. I had a big gust of headwind and I collapsed.

Ronquillo and his teammates had the last laugh, however, as they scored 96 points to win the bi-district title against Gig Harbor and the Tides 76 team points.

Meanwhile, in the 4A men’s team race, Curtis managed to outperform his women’s team by one spot, earning a 95-84 win over Emerald Ridge.
